The applicant must meet the criteria and requirements to apply for the certification process.
The applicant must be licensed by a governing board in their State or Province of residence.
The applicant must be in good standing and provide proof of the license.
The applicant then prepares and submits an application to become credentialed as a Certified Geek Therapist after obtaining their Certificate in Geek Cultural Competency and pay any associated fees with the application. This allows Leyline to follow your progress and manage all of the necessary documents throughout the process.
Individuals not wishing to pursue a Certificate or Certification are allowed to take trainings individually if wanted whether they are licensed by a governing board in their state or province of residence, however, the trainings may not count towards the certification or certificate without meeting the full requirements.
Types of Certification
Certificate in Geek Culture Competency
The applicant has six months to take 12 hours of CEUs for the Certificate in Geek Culture Competency.
Two of the 12 hours have to be attending a live webinar of “What It Means To Be A Geek - Cultural Implications.” This meets two of the 12 hour requirement.
Five required courses: One hour classes which contain overview cultural impressions of the specialized areas of Geek Therapy: Video Games, Anime, TTRPGS and Board Games, Fan Fiction, and Media. This meets five of the 12 hour requirement.
Five one hour classes of your choosing from the specialized areas of Geek Therapy: Video Games, Anime, TTRPGS and Board Games, Fan Fiction, and Media. This meets five of the 12 hour requirement.
You will take a CEU test after each of the trainings to prove proficiency of each module and then a full test afterwards which will be graded and requires a minimum of 80% to pass.
Certified Geek Therapist
Has obtained the Certificate in Geek Cultural Competency and additionally undergone additional training in other areas of geek therapy within Two Years of obtaining their Certificate in Geek Culture Competency status. Has undergone further specialized training in two of the core areas of Geek Therapy: Video Games, Anime, TTRPGS, Fan Fiction, and Media totaling 40 hours of training.
There is a requirement of supervision by a Certified Geek Therapist Diplomate in order to obtain Certification Status along with vignette discussions.
Once certification is approved, the Certified Geek Therapist can continue to use the term “Certified Geek Therapist” and all licensing and imaging rights for marketing purposes.
Certified Geek Therapist Diplomate
Has completed a 40+ of CEUs in the area of Geek Therapy, has been a Certified Geek Therapist for at least one year, holds a current Certificate in Geek Culture Competency, and has reviewed recordings and provided feedback for Certified Geek Therapists for at least one year. Diplomates can teach CEUs and create their own material under the umbrella of Geek Therapy and has been approved by Bean Professional Psychological Services PLLC as a Certified Trainer in Geek Therapy.
Re-credentialing takes place every two years.
Certified Geek Therapists have to take a minimum of 12 hours of CEUs by Certified Geek Therapy Trainers - online or offline within their two year span in order to keep their Certified Geek Therapist status.
