Geek Therapy & Geek Therapist Credentialing
Being a geek can be seen as difficult for many; the social awkwardness, ineptitude, and judgment from others leads individuals to feeling isolated in a world of their own. Geeks, by traditional definition, are passionate about anthologies and characters from a variety of fiction formats that are sometimes niche or unpopular that they have feelings of relatedness towards in an often lonely life. However, with the rise of popular media over the past several years, (e.g. Big Bang Theory, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s Avengers, Anime, etc.) self-identification as being a “geek” or “nerd” has become more mainstream. Even with the rise of cultural normalization and shows discussing “geek” items, there is still significant mystery surrounding geek culture that perplexes individuals who are not intimately familiar with them.
This is why we created these trainings and seminars. By providing high quality trainings with the experts and leaders in the field, clinicians and mental health experts can provide and share the knowledge that has been developed by working with their clients. These modalities have been resulting in clients having less anxiety (e.g., social), less depressive symptoms (e.g., after playing video games), improved self-esteem, richer interpersonal interactions, greater social and school engagement, and greater development of social skills and problem solving. They are being used to improve overall psychological well-being across all ages, as well as focusing on the specific needs of targeted populations, such as those with ADHD, ASD, PTSD, and mood and anxiety disorders. This endeavor is one of love and passion. Creating something of this caliber takes extraordinary time, effort, and resources. We are pursuing this program to better our professional and client based communities. We are making the community stronger, larger, and more diverse through these efforts. Inclusivity and unity are priorities. The formulation of standards of practice will provide a solid foundation for Geek Therapists to be accepted as knowledgeable service providers.
Geek Therapy practitioners use role playing, personal identification, and fantasy play in therapeutic endeavors, in various therapies, and within group therapy dynamics. These are utilized to establish connections, facilitate interactions, demonstrate analogous real-life experiences, and to facilitate personal and intrinsic growth within our clients.
Ethical standards have been created for us to adhere to when working with our clients. Even though designating oneself as a practitioner is an opt-in designation, it is important that we uphold our community’s ethical standards for ourselves and our patients. By signing this, you pledge to hold yourself up to clear and ethical standards of practice that you can be proud of - as can the community. Please see this Ethical Guidelines Opt-In for using Geek Therapy for mental health practices and serving clients: GEEK THERAPY ETHICS*.
*Opting in does not allow a practitioner to state that they are a Certified Geek Therapist or that they have had adequate training in these areas, but that they provide geek therapy to their clients. In order to become a Certified Geek Therapist a clinician must have undergone the formal training, adhere to the Geek Therapy ethical principles, and have shown that they meet the requirements. If you believe you have met them please apply for a Certified Geek Therapist credential.
